Playing with the ice

Despite the cold temperatures over the last few days the children have still enjoyed playing outside. They have been fortunate enough to have been able to experience cracking ice and mark making in the frost. Playing with the ice has generated lots of expressive language as well as some problem solving opportunities. The children tried to break the ice to release toys trapped inside and discovered that hitting the ice with a pan was a very effective way to smash it! 

Please ensure your child has a coat, hat and gloves in school everyday so they can enjoy being outside without feeling cold. Many thanks.

Read Write Inc.

This week the children have been introduced to Read Write Inc. The first sound they have been looking at is m. The children followed up the session by making a superhero mask to take home.

The play tray has been filled with items to help develop fine motor skills. 

In a number based circle time the children had to match the groups of superheroes to the number on the card.  

During our Read Write Inc. sessions the children took turns to form the letter m on the whiteboard. 

The children were invited to join in with a cutting and sticking activity to help them develop their use of positional language. An adult modelled examples and asked the children to describe where they were placing their superhero figures.

 

Toy Town

Welcome back!

Our new topic for this half term is Toy Town. This week the children have been talking about their favourite toys as well as playing toy bingo. In circle times the children have been collecting toys from around the classroom to match the number shown by an adult. They have also been sequencing toys by size and talking about bigger, smaller and the same. The children were encouraged to use their words to describe a toy hidden in a bag. 

The children have returned to school full of stories about their festive break. They have taken turns to share their news and have drawn and painted pictures of what they have been up to. 

The children had a super time joining in with a music and movement session. They moved around the room in a variety of ways and ended the session by exploring the different musical instruments.

A play tray was set up with numbered clouds and different sized rain drops. The children were encouraged to match the right amount of rain drops to the number on the cloud.

The children looked at images of different toys. They had to decide if they were indoor toys or outdoor toys. This generated lots of interesting discussions about why some toys should not be played with inside!
