This week we have been celebrating Chinese New Year. The children have been busy exploring rice and noodle themed play trays filled with characters from the story of the river race as well as examples of Chinese writing and numbers. Some children helped to make Chinese dragons from boxes which we used in a music and movement session. The children watched a clip of a family getting ready to celebrate Chinese New Year and discovered red envelopes are sometimes exchanged with money inside. The children liked this idea so we decorated our own money envelopes and filled them with chocolate coins!

Apple Numbers
As we continue to reinforce the a sound the children have been playing some apple themed games. Today they worked their hand muscles by threading pipe cleaner worms through numbered apples. The children were challenged to try and thread the right amount of worms to match the number. The children have also been learning an apple themed number song as well as making apple pies and printing with apples.

Dragon Dance
As part of our Chinese New Year celebrations the children made large dragons from boxes and colourful material.
This afternoon the Nursery and Pre School children spent a lovely session in the creative suite dancing and parading with the dragons.

Apple Pies
In Read Write Inc this week we are looking at the a sound. To help the children remember the sound we have been making apple pies. We talked about the shape of the pastry and counted the corners and edges. The children carefully added filling and folded in the corners. We talked about how the oven gets hot and why an adult would have to take our pies out of the hot oven.
Music Session
Today the children had a lovely music lesson with Mrs MacAlindon. They sang along to a song about a little robin on a cold day. The children added some actions and were able to experiment with a variety of musical instruments.
